Hastal\u0131k kal\u0131tsal olarak alt nesillere aktar\u0131labilirken ilerleyici, monojenik veya nadiren dijenik \u00f6zellik g\u00f6sterebilmektedir. \u0130lerledi\u011fi zaman kal\u0131c\u0131 k\u00f6rl\u00fc\u011fe neden olabilmektedir. Bu hastal\u0131k g\u00fcn\u00fcm\u00fczde d\u00fcnya \u00e7ap\u0131nda 2 milyondan fazla insan\u0131 etkilemektedir. RP hastalar\u0131n da ise \u0131\u015f\u0131\u011f\u0131n beyne iletilmesini sa\u011flayan ve elektrik sinyallerine d\u00f6n\u00fc\u015ft\u00fcrmek i\u00e7in opsinleri kullanan retinal fotoresept\u00f6r h\u00fccrelerin kayb\u0131 s\u00f6z konusudur. Bu durumdan yola \u00e7\u0131karak da bilim insanlar\u0131 \u00e7\u00f6z\u00fcm olarak \u0131\u015f\u0131\u011fa duyarl\u0131 olan alglerden al\u0131nan proteinlerin yard\u0131m\u0131yla bunun ger\u00e7ekle\u015febilece\u011fini g\u00f6zlemlediler. Bu hastalarda fotoresept\u00f6r kayb\u0131 olsa da g\u00f6zlerinde bu sinyalleri optik sinir yoluyla beyne iletilmesini sa\u011flayan mevcut ganglion h\u00fccreleri bulunmaktayd\u0131. Bilim insanlar\u0131 da bu h\u00fccrelere mikrobiyal opsin verilerek g\u00f6r\u00fc\u015f\u00fcn kazan\u0131labilece\u011fi d\u00fc\u015f\u00fcncesini ger\u00e7ekle\u015ftirebilmek i\u00e7in \u00e7al\u0131\u015ft\u0131lar. Hastaya verilen mikrobiyal opsin sayesinde hastan\u0131n g\u00f6z\u00fc birka\u00e7 ay i\u00e7inde yeni bir protein \u00fcretmeye ba\u015flad\u0131. G\u00f6rme engelli bir insana d\u0131\u015far\u0131dan bir protein verilerek bunun ger\u00e7ekle\u015fmesini sa\u011flanmas\u0131n\u0131n yan\u0131nda v\u00fccudun belli bir zamandan sonra bunu kendi proteini gibi yorumlayabilmesi a\u015f\u0131r\u0131 sevindirici bir durum.
